Ancient (Archaia) Ippola is believed to have been in the area of today’s Ano Poula in Kipoula, near Kounos. Where there was once a Temple of Ippolaitis Athena (Pausanias, author of Lakonika), today there stands a church of the Virgin Mary (Theotoku).
