Akrotiri

With 489 residents according to 2011 census, the Local Community of Akrotiri is located in the southwestern part of Santorini. The settlement of Akrotiri is the most noteworthy village in the Community, which also includes Agios Nikolaos and Mesa Chorio. The village of Akrotiri is 15 kilometers from Fira. In the Middle Ages, the settlement was built around the castle tower that stands there to this day. Akrotiri is famous for the prehistoric settlement discovered after excavations in the late 1960s.
