Kalavryta
(Kalavrita)

Community of the homonymous Municipal District with historic Kalavryta as its seat. It is made up of the villages of Avles, Vrachni, Krastikoi, Souvardo, Stasi Kerpini and the historic town of Kalavryta built on the slopes of Chelmos, on the site of ancient Cynaetha. The site of the sacrifice by Greek martyrs under German occupation. Today, it has enjoyed considerable touristic development with Chelmos' ski resort at the centre. Vrachni and Souvardo are both the highest in terms of altitude, inhabited villages in Kalavrita Municipality. A lovely excursion in the woods starts from Souvardo(about 5km) that ends 3km NE of Chelmos ski resort. Krastikoi is a small mountain village of livestock farming. Above the village to the east, was the Monastery of the Taxiarches Michael and Gabriel, the greater part of which has today been covered over by earth.
