The island of Santorini (or Thira) is a Cycladic island that is located in the southern part of the Aegean Sea. Santorini, Thirasia, and Aspronisi are remnants of the volcanic island of Strongyle, with the last volcanic eruption in 1950. The Municipality of Thira consists of the two Municipal Units of Thira (14,005 inhabitants according to the 2011 census) and Oia (1,545 inhabitants). The largest settlements on the island, Emporio (capital of Thira Municipality) and Fira, are here in the Municipal Unit of Thira. Santorini is one of the leading tourist destinations worldwide, combining archaeology, geology, industrial history, traditional villages, footpaths, vineyards that produce high quality wine, vast dark colored beaches, and above all its dramatic caldera, the volcano, and the waters of the Aegean that create a unique landscape.
