One of seven prefectures in the Peloponnese, Achaia covers the northwestern part of the peninsula. The prefecture is rather mountainous, since the mountain peaks of Chelmos and Erymanthos and the Panachaiko mountain range are situated on its boundary. The largest town and capital of the prefecture is Patras. Achaia includes many areas of interest, both during the summer months and in winter: historic Kalavryta, the villages of Zachlorou and Zarouchla, and the coastal areas from Akrata up to Rio and Patras.
